Announcements – Career Center /career University of Maine Thu, 20 Mar 2025 19:18:21 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.8.5 Beware of Job Scams /career/2024/10/02/job-scams/ Wed, 02 Oct 2024 15:47:49 +0000 https://sites.umaine.edu/career-new/?p=16577 This is a reminder to be aware of potential job scams.

Here are some common ways/ tips to detect a potential job scam:

  • Someone could be posing as a legitimate company. However, the contact name/ email is fraudulent and they do not actually work for the company;
  • The contact uses a free personal email; such as hotmail, yahoo, or a gmail account, rather than an official corporate/ organization email address;
  • The language of the email from the employer, and description of the position, is not clear;
  • A “bait-and-switch” position is when the follow-up to your application is for a job title different from the original job title which you applied to.
  • When any monetary transactions are involved; you should never have to pay for the promise of a job opportunity, and employers typically will not send you any money in advance of beginning work;
  • Do not cash or deposit any large sums of money received as an advance;
  • If you are asked to send any payment by wire service or courier, do not send any payments;
  • Do not provide your credit card or bank account numbers to potential employers;
  • A high pay rate for doing very little work should cause you to pause and conduct further research;
  • If you receive a job offer very soon after applying to the position, especially prior to an actual interview, and the employer only communicates by email;
  • If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

If you encounter any of these things, please save all documentation and any email communications with the employer/ potential scammer, and contact the Career Center staff.

(“Hang In There Graduates and Don’t Make Excuses,” Wall Street Journal, 4/30/2020.)

In her first year teaching at Yale Law School, Chua got a call in her office that she was late for her first faculty photo. She sprinted from her office in heels, down some stairs and across the courtyard, where everyone was lined up with the photographer, waiting for her. And in Chua’s words, here’s what happened next:

“When I was about fifteen yards away, I tripped. I tried to regain my balance but couldn’t. I stumbled forward once, twice, arms flailing, then fell sprawling all over the grass. With everyone watching, I’d executed a perfect flying face plant.”

“I remember lying there, thinking, ‘You know, Amy, I’m not sure you can recover from this one.’ I actually thought about just running away and never coming back. But somehow I survived that nightmare. And you will too. So hang in there, try to focus on how lucky you are compared to so many others, and you’ll not only make it through, but be stronger for it.”

I’ve discovered in 15 years of teaching etiquette that behind every successful person is a phenomenal face plant story. The difference in those who stay down and those who get up is determination and a willingness to learn from the stumbles in life. Humility and a sense of humor help, too. Chua’s advice is spot on: you’ll be stronger for it.

When you graduate, if you stumble out of the gate, get up and keep going. Your future success awaits.

Micro-Credentials /career/2020/09/27/engaged-black-bear/ Sun, 27 Sep 2020 11:23:06 +0000 https://sites.umaine.edu/career-new/?p=12112

What is a micro-credential?

A micro-credential showcases your competency in skills that are needed in today’s workforce. A verified micro-credential is earned when learners are able to demonstrate what they know and what they are able to do, related to a specific topic. Additionally, it is a verified credential earned when learners demonstrate what they know and are able to do related to a specific area of study. They show their understanding through evidence and application. Micro-credentials are made up of stacked digital badges along a pathway that highlight the skills needed to be successful.

What are UMS micro-credentials?

Each UMS micro-credential is designed to take a learner from foundational knowledge and rigorous training, to application in a real-world work-setting. You can earn three levels of badges taking you from foundational learning to application of that learning. When you earn the final stacked macro-badge in your pathway you have earned the UMS micro-credential.

Why should I earn an UMS micro-credential?

86% of hiring managers indicate that it is “very important” that recent graduates demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge and skills in real-world settings and only 39% think recent graduates are well-prepared to apply skills in real-world settings. Hart Research Associates. Fulfilling the American Dream: Liberal Education and the Future of Work (Washington, D.C.: AAC&U, 2018)
