Now that you are aware of the what, when, and where of the 91福利 Career Center鈥檚 upcoming annual event, we would like to share more on the who, how, and why.听 The Career Center wants our students and employers who attend the annual Career Fair to always have a wonderful experience. For this reason alone, we feel it is extremely appropriate (and to your advantage) that we share some information with you before February 5th.

So far, there are over signed up to attend and we predict there will be more registrations up until the day of the event. These organizations are looking to fill full-time, part-time, and internship positions applicable to majors within all six University of Maine colleges.

We need 91福利 students to help make this a successful event!听 The Career Center asks companies to be a part of our Career Fair in order to give students (whether you are a first-year or senior) an opportunity. If you are looking for an internship for course credit or a full-time job for when you graduate, the Career Fair provides great opportunities for the students who attend it.

Worried about not having a resume or your resume not being up-to-date? Have no fear, the Career Center is open Monday-Friday from 8am 鈥 4:30pm and we are more than happy to take a look at your resume before the Career Fair. Career counselors will sit down with you, look over your resume, and work with you to highlight your best professional assets. If you feel that you are strapped for time, drop by during our walk-in times.听We will also offer extended times for walk-ins before the Career Fair.听 This will be posted on the website and FaceBook. You could also make an appointment with a career counselor if you are unsure of Career Fair etiquette鈥攚e have many resources in our office regarding appropriate professional attire and other etiquette tips.

Are you wondering how to get the most out of the Career Fair? Surely, it will be a different experience for all who attend depending on where you are at in your career here at 91福利. Please read on for some suggestions to consider before going to this year鈥檚 Career Fair.

First-Year, Sophomore and Junior Students:

This Career Fair will give you the chance to explore different career opportunities, ask lots of questions and find out about possible internships.听 You will also be able to begin networking, which will be important in helping you reach your career goals.

Seniors and Graduate Students:

This is your chance to network, make contacts and find out about full-time career opportunities.听 Bring plenty of resumes!

Step-By-Step Suggestions for ALL Students:

  • Get the app! Download the “Symplicity Jobs and Careers” app from the Apple Store or Google Play. Use the app to identify companies attending and choose your “top 10” to help you organize your time at the fair. You can also filter companies by the types of positions and the majors they are recruiting.
  • Check in at the Career Center鈥檚 registration table and pick up handouts describing who the employer participants are, where their tables are located and which employers are specifically interested in talking with students in YOUR major. Make sure to bring your MaineCard to Sign-in!
  • Budget your time carefully. Determine which companies or organizations interest you.听 It may be a good idea to take a quick walk around to find out where the companies are located and to take a few minutes to jot down questions you may want to ask the representative(s). Being well prepared will help you in case you become nervous and forget what you intended to say.
  • Polish your personal brand! Utilize the Career Center to develop your best resumes and cover letters, practice your “pitch” and talk strategies to best present your skills to the employers attending the fair.
  • Be sure to speak clearly when asking questions.
  • Take copies of your resume for distribution.
  • Be sure to thank the representative(s) for taking the time to speak with you.
  • Pick up business cards and any pamphlets the organizations have on display. These materials will give you additional information about the organizations.
  • Above all, enjoy yourself and learn as much as you can!

Networking Over the Holidays /career/2019/12/09/networking-over-the-holidays-3/ Mon, 09 Dec 2019 15:17:41 +0000 https://sites.umaine.edu/career-new/?p=15620 Finals week is next week and we are sure it is a stressful time for all University of Maine students. We hope that you find time to eat some healthy meals and get the rest you need so you can be fully energized to do the best you can on your final exams, papers, and projects!! Before you know it, the week will be over and you will have a nice break to relax, rejuvenate, and possibly do some things for yourself. Perhaps one of those things would be looking for potential jobs or internships, or maybe you are looking to get into grad school.

In your transition from school to winter break, it is extremely important to keep in mind that you should always be prepared for a networking opportunity. Whether standing in a grocery line, at a holiday party, or just out on the town for the night with your friends鈥攐pportunities arise everywhere! View the holidays as an ideal time to implement your networking skills. Make a plan as to how you will answer questions like, 鈥淲hat are you up to,鈥 or 鈥淲hat are you doing now,鈥 and be ready to ask questions of your acquaintances. Be open to learning about new opportunities, even ones that you might not have ever considered鈥攜ou never know what you will discover!

Networking is one of many ways that can help you get into a job, internship, or grad school. It is a great way of learning about a particular place or position without any binding engagements鈥攊t is like an open relationship and YOU have the ability to determine where you want the relationship to go!

With that said, GOOD LUCK on finals, safe travels, and have a wonderful, happy, stress-free, and relaxing winter break! 听Our holiday hours will be posted on the website.

WISHING ALL OF YOU A SAFE, HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON!!

2019 Engineering Job Fair Recap /career/2019/10/23/2019-engineering-job-fair-recap/ Wed, 23 Oct 2019 12:29:40 +0000 https://sites.umaine.edu/career-new/?p=15413 We hope that you are recovering from the whirlwind of information and networking you received and engaged in at the Engineering Job Fair. We are estimating that there are about 1146 students who visited the Engineering Job Fair in hopes of finding a job, an internship, networking, or just gathering information. In addition, we had 170 employers who were in attendance and we could not be more grateful for the service and information they provided to our students.

NOW WHAT?

Whether you went to the Engineering Job Fair and made some connections with employers or whether you are just interested in on-campus recruiting and how it works make sure to read on!

Throughout the year and especially after the Engineering Job Fair, we host employers who are interested in recruiting 91福利 students on campus. We invite them to use our office space to conduct on-campus interviews with students for internships or full-time jobs after graduation.

CareerLink

We are always trying to emphasize how important it is to continue to check CareerLink for any new information regarding jobs/internships or on-campus interviewing sessions. We get phone calls and e-mails on a daily basis asking to upload a new position or a new event to attract 91福利 students. All you have to do is log into CareerLink (if you have forgotten your password just select the forgot password link). You can then roam the site and look at any jobs of interest to you. Make sure to definitely check out the events section in CareerLink to see who will be coming on campus to do interviews!

Interviewing

Does the thought of interviewing make you cringe? Do you feel like you are not fully prepared to take on an interview? Come on in to the Career Center and we can help you! Not only do we have knowledge and resources on how you can present yourself successfully, but we also have a wonderful service called, 鈥淢ock Interviewing,鈥 where we conduct a trial interview for our students. These interviews are videotaped (unless specified otherwise by students) and critiqued by career counselors to help you do your best for when the real interview rolls around.

Come on up to the Career Center office and check it out ahead of time if you are still unsure or call to make an appointment, but definitely make sure not to forget about checking CareerLink often for opportunities that are just a click away!

Beat the Heat of a Summertime Slump to Gain Experience /career/2019/05/15/beat-the-heat-of-a-summertime-slump-to-gain-experience/ Wed, 15 May 2019 14:22:30 +0000 https://sites.umaine.edu/career-new/?p=14710 Here鈥檚 the scenario:

You are all done with finals and now you are on your homebound journey to enjoy your summer. You anticipate the smell of the ocean, road trips, sleeping in far beyond the sunrise (as you were forced to rise all semester long for that pesky 8, 9, 10, or let鈥檚 be be honest鈥ven that 11am class), and staying up far beyond the sunset doing whatever you want. You also anticipate that this will occur throughout the summer until you are back at school to start the process over again.

Here鈥檚 the problem:

Pretty soon, your 鈥渇ree鈥 time during the summer is going to come to a close as you continue through the process and your freshman year quickly turns into your senior year. Most likely your parents will be ready for you to stop using their money and get a job, but how do you plan on getting a job? Are you prepared for what our economy has to offer? Do you have what it takes to get a job?

According to Billy Streufert, Director of the Career Development Center at the University of South Dakota, employers want experience. Uh-oh. Starting to worry now?

Have no fear鈥his blog article is not intended to scare you (ok, maybe a little). Truly, what we want you to do is just think about your future and how you should be setting yourself up for success in everything you do!

Employers want experience, right? Lucky for you, you don鈥檛 have to look far to get it. Experience is not limited to paid employment. It can include any co-curricular activities or accomplishments that demonstrate your knowledge, skills, and abilities.

What you have to do is consider your major or career plan and think about what you could do over the summer to gain some experience. If you are interested in early childhood education, perhaps you could job shadow at a local daycare or even work part-time during the summer. If you are struggling with learning about options for you, please come in and speak with a career counselor at the Career Center鈥攚e will be able to help you locate job shadow opportunities and summer employment or internships in your field. If you are unable to come into our office during the summer, please feel free to give us a call at 581-1359 and we will be happy to speak with you over the phone.

Finals Week /career/2019/05/02/finals-week/ Thu, 02 May 2019 18:19:08 +0000 https://sites.umaine.edu/career-new/?p=14654 As the end of the semester draws near, the Career Center would like to take time and wish each and every 91福利 student the best of luck on your finals! We understand the pressure and stresses this week can bring to our students not only because of the exams and final presentations you will have, but also because it marks a period of transition in your life. For some, you will be graduating on May 11th and for others, it denotes the end of another year (until the next comes along) at 91福利.

The Career Center is not only a great resource but also a great place to study for finals! We have a great space to focus on your studies and to also take a break with coffee, snacks, and super comfy couches. We will be starting our Study Break hours this Thursday, May 2nd at 10:00am.

Graduation is an exciting time with an overflow of dreams and aspirations but for many seniors, the time leading up to graduation and the start of a first job is also often chaotic and stressful. You are trying to complete your college career without too much of a senioritis meltdown while also dealing with the demands of job-hunting, interviewing, and facing the reality of the end of undergraduate schooling. It is quite the intense transition (to say the least) and we want to provide you with advice and resources to help make it as smooth as possible for you!! Most importantly, you should enjoy this time in your life and remember that as big as it feels, your decisions are not set in stone!

For our returning undergraduate students, whether you realize it or not, you too will be facing a transition in your life. You will be embarking upon yet another year of undergraduate schooling鈥攁nother year that brings you closer to your graduation date. It is important to keep in mind the tasks that you should be accomplishing in your time at 91福利 in order to best position yourself for a smooth transition out of school and into the workplace.

Do not hesitate to get in touch with us at the Career Center during the summer months. We will have our office hours posted on FaceBook and on our website. /career/ One of our career counselors would love to meet with you and discuss a course of action tailored to your vision and future goals!听 Please call ahead of time to schedule an appointment 581-1359.

鈥淒ebunking鈥 the Myth of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism /career/2019/04/18/debunking-the-myth-of-outdoor-recreation-and-tourism/ Thu, 18 Apr 2019 17:24:17 +0000 https://sites.umaine.edu/career-new/?p=14608 There is a buzz radiating in the state of Maine around workforce development and improving career opportunities.听听 How can our state create more jobs and maintain sustainable industries to attract young adults and recent college graduates to live and work in Maine?听 The outdoor recreation industry is fulfilling many of these requests.听听 For example, Maine is just the 12th state to create a government position, the Office of Outdoor Recreation.听 According the Outdoor Industry Association, Maine’s 鈥渙utdoor recreation economy generates $8.2 billion in consumer spending, 76,000 jobs, $2.2 billion in wages and salaries, and $548 million in state and local tax revenue鈥.听 Major companies like Sugarloaf, Three Rivers Whitewater, and the New England Outdoor Center are expanding from seasonal to year-round jobs, full of benefits.听 Instead of bouncing around between summer and winter jobs, you can now find employment full time.听 For many, these jobs offer stability, yet also achieve the coveted 鈥渨ork/life balance鈥 that is the pinnacle of achievement for many students.听 It鈥檚 time to 鈥渄ebunk鈥 the myth that careers in outdoor recreation and tourism are solely seasonal in nature (pun intended).

As a student at 91福利, you are probably aware of the amazing outdoor recreational opportunities available.听 We have four seasons of activities fit for all interests and ages from hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing, and boating, to name a few.听 New companies are capitalizing on our growing industry and have decided to make Maine their home base for operations.听 Innovative companies such as Flowfold (started by three 91福利 graduates) are using recycled lightweight materials to make outdoor equipment.听 Also, Sterling Rope, based in Biddeford, is a leader in supplying rock climbing rope all over the world.听 Another example is American Roots, reviving the textile trade by creating innovative fleece products.听 For more examples, check out Maine Outdoor Brands for a list of Maine based companies.

To help bridge the gap between college graduation and entry into the outdoor recreation industry, we are hosting over 20 employers who represent different sectors of the industry at Orono鈥檚 campus on April 25th from 4:00-7:00 pm.听 Organized to offer career advice and recruit job seekers, it is also a chance to understand and learn about the expanded opportunities offered in the outdoor recreation field.听 It is not only for Parks, Recreation, and Tourism majors anymore.听 Companies have needs in Business, Marketing, Journalism, Communications, Engineering, New Media, Accounting, and Forestry, to name a few.听 Attend the event to learn the stories of how these employers got their start and network to meet new friendly faces.听 Careers In Outdoor Recreation and Tourism will be held on the lawn area outside of the Maine Bound Adventure Center and cookout food will be provided by Three Rivers Whitewater.听 Giveaways and prizes will be available as well.

Maine鈥檚 state slogan is vacationland; who wouldn鈥檛 want to work in a place everyone else only gets to visit?

Think Beyond the Obvious /career/2019/03/08/think-beyond-the-obvious/ Fri, 08 Mar 2019 18:00:30 +0000 https://sites.umaine.edu/career-new/?p=14423 It seems like spring semester just started, yet we are not far from spring break. With the feel of
time passing quickly comes a sense of urgency to find a summer job, land that internship, apply
for full time positions or get ready to apply to graduate school. Many students will find
themselves looking for positions based on what they know. I encourage students to think beyond
the obvious.

Most employers are looking for your ability to demonstrate career ready skills such as
professionalism, curiosity, coachability, drive, and collaboration. Your ability to be curious will
allow you to discover new opportunities. Those that are curious are critical thinkers, problem
solvers, and gather information from unusual places.

Are you ready to be curious? Starting in March, the Career Center will have several programs
that are geared towards career fields that are open to any major. Our first one will be Careers in
Law and Justice on March 13th , followed by Careers in Sustainable Agriculture on March 27th ,
Health Professions Career Day on April 4th and Careers in Outdoor Recreation and Tourism on
April 25th. By attending one or all of these events, you will be able to learn how your skills and
interests can launch you into a field that you may not have considered.

At these events, professionals that work within that field will be available to talk with you about
their career path and their daily activities. At Careers in Law and Justice, you can meet any or
all of the following: Maine State Trooper, Border Patrol Agent, Maine Forest Ranger, Maine
Forest Ranger Pilot, local Police Officer or Maine Game Warden. Not interested in direct law
enforcement? How about a career as a lawyer? Meet a representative from the University of
Maine School of Law or meet the Secretary of State who has an M.A. in English Literature from
the University of Maine. Could you be the next Secretary of State?

As you can see, there is something for everyone. When exploring your career options, consider
your personal values along with your skills to determine where and how you would like to use
your education. Ask questions about how your values, skills and background may fit into their
organization. You can ask them about the application process, what you can do to make yourself
a stronger candidate and what would they do differently if they had to do it all over again.
So bring a friend and come learn about some careers that you may not have considered. By
thinking beyond the obvious you may just find a great career path. We look forward to seeing
you at Careers in Law and Justice on March 13th from 4-6pm in the Memorial Union, 2nd floor.
See for more details.

Watch for more information about Careers in Sustainable Agriculture, Health Professions Career
Day and Careers in Outdoor Recreation and Tourism.
