Des Barres, and the Making of The Atlantic Neptune<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/umaine.edu\/canam\/about\/directors-staff\/stephen-j-hornsby\/\">Stephen J. Hornsby<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mqup.ca\/surveyors-of-empire-products-9780773538481.php?page_id=46\"><em>Surveyors of Empire: Samuel Holland, J.F.W. Des Barres, and the Making of The Atlantic Neptune<\/em><\/a> was published by McGill-Queen\u2019s University Press in April 2011.\u00a0 The book examines British surveying and mapping of northeastern North America in the 1760s and early 1770s, and the publication of <a href=\"http:\/\/mqup.mcgill.ca\/book.php?bookid=2611\"><em>The Atlantic Neptune<\/em><\/a>, a monumental four-volume nautical atlas.\u00a0 Professor Matthew Edney, University of Southern Maine and Director of the History of Cartography project, comments:\u00a0 \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mqup.ca\/surveyors-of-empire-products-9780773538481.php?page_id=46\"><em>Surveyors of Empire<\/em><\/a> is an outstanding work of scholarship, well grounded in the archive, a project that provides a telling parable of imperial power.\u00a0 Accessible and understated, it should be of interest to a wide array of readers.\u201d\u00a0 The book is lavishly illustrated with maps and historical images.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Director Stephen J.
