DESCRIPTION:Math Colloquium: September 23\, 2016\n3:00-4:05pm in Hill Auditorium\, Barrows Hall\nRefreshments at 3pm\, Talk at 3:15pm \nSpeaker: Prof. Eknath Ghate\nTitle: Zig-zag holds for Galois representations \nAbstract: Describing the shape of the reduction of local Galois representations attached to cusp forms\, at primes away from the level — or more generally\, the reduction of two-dimensional crystalline representations — remains an open problem. A folklore conjecture attributed to Breuil\, Buzzard and Emerton predicts that the reduction is irreducible if the weight is even and the slope is fractional. \nIn this talk we state and prove the zig-zag conjecture\, which treats the case of large exceptional weights and half-integral slopes. The conjecture predicts that the reduction alternates between certain irreducible and reducible representations\, in a pattern governed by the relative size of two auxiliary parameters. Special cases of zig-zag have previously been established using Langlands correspondences.

SUMMARY:History Department Symposium Series: Creole at Sea: Race and Belonging in the Age of Revolution
DESCRIPTION:The History Department Symposium Series presents “Creole at Sea: Race and Belonging in the Age of Revolution.” The talk will be delivered by Nathan Elliott Marvin\, associate professor of history\, University of Arkansas at Little Rock. The talk is scheduled for September 28 at 3:00 PM. \nBorn in French-Colonial Mauritius at the end of the 18th Century\, Jean-Baptiste Tabardin spent much of his youth at sea in a world transformed by the French Revolutionary Wars. Sailing first with French privateers and later\, after capture\, under British command\, he traveled from madagascar to China and across the Atlantic world\, passing through Bombay\, Canton\, London\, Halifax\, Bermuda\, and Guadeloupe. \nHis unpublished memoir\, written between 1805 and about 1814\, offers remarkably candid reflections on sex\, religion\, honor\, and racial inequality in the age of revolutions. Classified as a “free man of color\,” Tabardin instead identified as “Creole\,” a term he understood as meaningful far beyond the island of his birth. Following Tabardin across oceans\, this talk asks what it meant to call oneself “Creole” far from home. \nThis event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Maine and the Centennial Exhibition of 1876: A Curator’s View of Researching and Designing a Museum Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Catherine Cyr has wide experience in history-based museums in Maine from the Pejepscot History Center in Brunswick to the Franco-American Collection at USM\, the Deer Isle Granite Museum\, and the Maine Maritime Museum. She holds degrees from Bowdoin College and the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture at the University of Delaware. \nHer illustrated lecture and discussion explores Maine’s participation in the 1876 Centennial Exposition — the first World’s Fair held in the United States\, based on her work for the Maine Historical Society’s newest exhibition\, Celebrating a Century: Maine’s Contributions to the 1876 Centennial Exposition. \nAccommodation requests should be sent to Professor Liam Riordan at riordan@maine.edu.
