DESCRIPTION:“Stop Calling America An Experiment” \nAmerica\, like a 7th-grade science project\, is an experiment. Right? Wrong! This image of America as an experiment crowds out recognition of the many ways the American Founding and its creation of a republican form of government were the antithesis of experimentation\, grounding its political and moral principles instead in time-tested customs\, rituals\, and institutions embedded in the constitutional heritage of England and the ethical texture of Christian civilization. America\, properly understood\, is not a product of experimentation but a product of inheritance. The point is not to rehash the “rights of Englishmen versus natural rights” or “creed versus cultures” debates\, but to show how the deluge of overtures to the American “experiment” in light of the Semiquincentennial distorts Americans’ political psychology. SUMMARY:SAT Prep Matters
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Mary Smyth’s SAT Boot Camp has been used successfully to prepare students to take the SAT for many years. Students practice taking short sections of the test\, and are relaxed and well-rested\, so they are able to absorb the lessons and practice at their best. Using lessons that she writes herself\, Smyth has helped many students through their own hard work improve their SAT scores by 100-200 points.

DESCRIPTION:Libra Lecture Series\, University of Maine Mathematics\nProf. Eknath Ghate\, Visiting Libra Professor\, University of Maine and TIFR Mumbai India\nTitle : Reductions of semi-stable representations using the Iwahori mod p LLC.\nLecture 1: Friday\, September 18 at 3pm in 208 Neville Hall \nAbstract: Semi-stable p-adic representations arise in nature when one takes the local Galois representations at p attached to newforms for which p exactly divides the level of the form and there is no character at p. \nIn this series of talks\, we shall speak about an interesting alternating pattern that emerges when one computes the mod p reductions of semi-stable representations of weights k at most p+1. The method uses Langlands correspondences and works (in principle) for all weights k. The pattern leads to a proof of the zig-zag conjecture. \nThe plan is to: \n1) State the main theorem about the alternating pattern\n2) Introduce the Iwahori mod p Local Langlands Correspondence\n3) Introduce some classical facts about p-adic functions on Q_p\n4) Use these facts to define certain GL_2(Q_p)-Banach spaces\n5) Show how to reduce these Banach spaces to prove the theorem. \nThis will be a teaching style series of talks mostly at the master’s level. \nReferences:\n1. SUMMARY:Meditations on Perihelion
DESCRIPTION:“Meditations on Perihelion” is an immersive experience featuring full-dome video\, music\, and live performance by Tom Luther. The work is presented in 7 movements that explore the different possibilities of connections between science and art.  It explores the world of science through the world of art by immersing the viewer in 3d visuals and sound. Inspired by astronomical data the images are intended as a starting point for the audience’s imagination. The focus of this iteration has been on the three background cycles (Milankovitch Cycles) that govern our planet’s orbital alignment and seasonal changes. \nTom Luther is a performer\, composer\, improviser and audio-visual artist. His work ranges from solo and small group acoustic music to computer based interactive video projects. He draws on his experience in Western European art music\, jazz\, and modern composition styles to create a unique hybrid language. He teaches piano\, composition\, and digital music at Midcoast Music Academy in Rockport\, Maine.
