Understanding the underlying assumptions regarding conflict\, reflecting on the nature of conflict\, acquiring communication skills and strategies and fulfilling the requirements to serve on the Maine Court Alternative Dispute Resolution roster all make up essential topics of the course. \nParticipants will also explore the applications and extensions of the Transformative Mediation model as it applies to the workplace\, town planning\, schools and family conflict. \nIn light of the polarization in the world today\, this mediation program provides a much-needed approach to dialogue that emphasizes how living with our differences is just as important as reaching an agreement.

DESCRIPTION:Math Colloquium: September 23\, 2016\n3:00-4:05pm in Hill Auditorium\, Barrows Hall\nRefreshments at 3pm\, Talk at 3:15pm \nSpeaker: Prof. Eknath Ghate\nTitle: Zig-zag holds for Galois representations \nAbstract: Describing the shape of the reduction of local Galois representations attached to cusp forms\, at primes away from the level — or more generally\, the reduction of two-dimensional crystalline representations — remains an open problem. A folklore conjecture attributed to Breuil\, Buzzard and Emerton predicts that the reduction is irreducible if the weight is even and the slope is fractional. \nIn this talk we state and prove the zig-zag conjecture\, which treats the case of large exceptional weights and half-integral slopes. The conjecture predicts that the reduction alternates between certain irreducible and reducible representations\, in a pattern governed by the relative size of two auxiliary parameters. Special cases of zig-zag have previously been established using Langlands correspondences.

DESCRIPTION:91����’s Hazing Prevention Research Lab (HPRL) and StopHazing will host an exclusive\, free screening of the documentary 4000 Days\, with filmmaker Daniel Catullo and executive producers Julie and Gary DeVercelly\, on Tuesday Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. in DP Corbett 100. \nThe film chronicles the public struggle of three families whose personal tragedies become part of a nationwide movement for change — and the center of a push for legislative reform around the dangers of hazing. After losing their sons to fraternity hazing\, the families begin a relentless public fight that resulted in the passage of the federal Stop Campus Hazing Act. \n4000 Days captures their journey — the title representing the number of days it took to turn grief into action\, then grief into law. From intimate personal moments to painful court appearances\, the film tells a story not just about loss\, but also one of resilience\, undying determination and the power of ordinary people to turn tragedy into lasting impact. \nUniversity of Maine Professor of Higher Education Elizabeth Allan\, a leading expert on hazing and hazing prevention in higher education\, and 91���� alumna Meredith Stewart will also be on hand for the screening. Allan is director and principal of the HPRL at 91����\, as well as principal and founder of the research group StopHazing. Stewart is StopHazing’s director of strategy and operations. Both consulted with lawmakers and congressional staff during the crafting of the Stop Campus Hazing Act\, and appear throughout the film. \nJulie and Gary DeVercelly\, who lost their son Gary Jr. to hazing and who will be at the screening\, are longtime supporters of 91���� and Allan’s work. \nThe screening is being held during National Hazing Awareness Week (Sept. 21-25). DESCRIPTION:Many organizations and community groups rely on volunteers for a variety of food events such as fundraising\, fellowships\, food pantries or other service to the community. But cooking for a crowd is tricky! How do you store all that food? When is the food completely cooked? How long can you leave food on the buffet table? Join 91���� Cooperative Extension Professor Kathy Savoie\, MS\, RD\, in this workshop on safe food handling designed specifically for volunteers. SUMMARY:TIDES Talk: Essential Consideration for Math Intervention with Sarah R. Powell
DESCRIPTION:Many students experience difficulty with math and benefit from targeted math intervention. In the latest talk in the Project TIDES seminar series\, Sarah R. Powell from the University of Texas will focus on math trajectories for students and five research-validated practices that are essential for the design and delivery of math intervention. \nProject TIDES (Teaching and Inclusion for Disability Equity in STEM) is an innovative postdoctoral training program funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation providing early-career scholars with mentoring and professional development that centers the full inclusion of all persons in science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning and work. The talk will take place via Zoom. \nSarah R. Powell is a professor in the College of Education at The University of Texas at Austin and associate director of the Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk. Her research\, teaching and service focus on mathematics\, particularly for students who experience mathematics differently. \nPowell is currently principal investigator (PI) of an Institute of Education Sciences (IES) efficacy grant (RAAMPS) related to word-problem solving at Grade 4. Powell is also PI of SPIRAL\, an IES grant which works collaboratively with Grade 4 and 5 teachers who provide mathematics instruction to students with mathematics difficulty. Powell is Co-PI of STAIR 2.0 (funded by IES) in which the team works with middle school special education math teachers and SCALE and SCALE-UP (funded by the U.S. Department of Education) in which the team is replicating a fraction intervention in Grades 4-8. Powell collaborates on Math Words\, an IES development grant about mathematics vocabulary. To help create the next generation of researchers focused on mathematics\, Powell is PI of a doctoral leadership grant (LIME) funded by the Office of Special Education Programs. Powell was awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) in 2019. \nPowell understands all of these efforts are a team effort\, and she thanks her project leads\, graduate students\, research assistants and research collaborators as well as the teachers and students who participate in these projects.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Mary Smyth’s SAT Boot Camp has been used successfully to prepare students to take the SAT for many years. Students practice taking short sections of the test\, and are relaxed and well-rested\, so they are able to absorb the lessons and practice at their best. Using lessons that she writes herself\, Smyth has helped many students through their own hard work improve their SAT scores by 100-200 points.

How do material remains shape our understanding of people\, places\, and past experiences\, even as they carry traces and transformations that exceed what is recalled or recorded? Join us as we consider the many ways memory is retained\, created\, transformed\, and contested through the material world. Panelists will utilize images drawn from their archaeological works\, museum objects\, landscape studies\, and other experiences as starting points for brief reflections on memory—whether personal\, social\, cultural\, political\, environmental\, or material.
