DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our next research seminar on Monday 10/26 from 3:00-4:00pm in 421 Neville Hall.聽 Jack Buttcane from the University of Maine will be speaking on Mellin-Barnes integrals as a class of special functions.聽 Please see the information below: \nResearch Seminar\nMonday\, October 26\, 2026\n3:00-4:00pm\n421 Neville Hall \nSpeaker: Prof Jack Buttcane\, University of Maine\nTitle: Mellin-Barnes integrals as a class of special functions \nAbstract: The class (set) of elementary functions are (usually) the functions that can be built from (real or complex) constants\, powers\, exponentials and trigonometric functions using the basic arithmetic operations plus composition and possibly inversion.聽 A well-known example of a function that is not in this space (class/set) is the antiderivative of the Gaussian f(x) = exp(-x^2).聽 As many useful and interesting functions are not elementary\, this leads to the subject of special functions.聽 Special functions often arise as antiderivatives of elementary functions or as solutions to differential equations\, and we would like to consider a class (set) of functions that is large enough to cover a lot of interesting new functions\, but still small enough that we can say something about their properties.聽 Mellin-Barnes integrals (specifically the Meijer-G function) are such a class and they contain the generalized hypergeometric functions as a special case.聽 I will discuss the properties of the class of Mellin-Barnes integrals and their properties\, e.g. domain/definition\, holomorphy\, asymptotics\, differential equations\, antiderivatives\, recurrence relations\, etc. 聽(I鈥檓 not going to talk about Bessel functions outside of the classical ones.)
