SUMMARY:TIDES Talk: Essential Consideration for Math Intervention with Sarah R. Powell
DESCRIPTION:Many students experience difficulty with math and benefit from targeted math intervention. In the latest talk in the Project TIDES seminar series\, Sarah R. Powell from the University of Texas will focus on math trajectories for students and five research-validated practices that are essential for the design and delivery of math intervention. \nProject TIDES (Teaching and Inclusion for Disability Equity in STEM) is an innovative postdoctoral training program funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation providing early-career scholars with mentoring and professional development that centers the full inclusion of all persons in science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning and work. The talk will take place via Zoom. \nSarah R. Powell is a professor in the College of Education at The University of Texas at Austin and associate director of the Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk. Her research\, teaching and service focus on mathematics\, particularly for students who experience mathematics differently. \nPowell is currently principal investigator (PI) of an Institute of Education Sciences (IES) efficacy grant (RAAMPS) related to word-problem solving at Grade 4. Powell is also PI of SPIRAL\, an IES grant which works collaboratively with Grade 4 and 5 teachers who provide mathematics instruction to students with mathematics difficulty. Powell is Co-PI of STAIR 2.0 (funded by IES) in which the team works with middle school special education math teachers and SCALE and SCALE-UP (funded by the U.S. Department of Education) in which the team is replicating a fraction intervention in Grades 4-8. Powell collaborates on Math Words\, an IES development grant about mathematics vocabulary. To help create the next generation of researchers focused on mathematics\, Powell is PI of a doctoral leadership grant (LIME) funded by the Office of Special Education Programs. Powell was awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) in 2019. \nPowell understands all of these efforts are a team effort\, and she thanks her project leads\, graduate students\, research assistants and research collaborators as well as the teachers and students who participate in these projects.

SUMMARY:Maine and the Centennial Exhibition of 1876: A Curator’s View of Researching and Designing a Museum Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Catherine Cyr has wide experience in history-based museums in Maine from the Pejepscot History Center in Brunswick to the Franco-American Collection at USM\, the Deer Isle Granite Museum\, and the Maine Maritime Museum. She holds degrees from Bowdoin College and the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture at the University of Delaware. \nHer illustrated lecture and discussion explores Maine’s participation in the 1876 Centennial Exposition — the first World’s Fair held in the United States\, based on her work for the Maine Historical Society’s newest exhibition\, Celebrating a Century: Maine’s Contributions to the 1876 Centennial Exposition. \nAccommodation requests should be sent to Professor Liam Riordan at riordan@maine.edu.

Teaching Focus Hours offers a dedicated\, distraction-free space to turn intention into finished work—right alongside your colleagues. \nThis is a high-focus\, low-distraction work session modeled after writing accountability groups. We spend 10 minutes setting goals\, 60 minutes in silent focus\, and 5 minutes wrapping up. A strict\, predictable rhythm allows you to enter and leave as your schedule allows without disrupting your colleagues. \nCo-facilitated by Dr. Dawn Emerson\, Assistant Professor of Kinesiology and Physical Education. \nEvery Tuesdays from 1:30pm-2:45pm. DESCRIPTION:How do images\, objects\, and landscapes help us remember – and what might they retain or remember in their own right? How do material remains shape our understanding of people\, places\, and past experiences\, even as they carry traces and transformations that exceed what is recalled or recorded? Join us as we consider the many ways memory is retained\, created\, transformed\, and contested through the material world.
