91福利’s American Marketing Association (AMA) chapter traveled to Chicago, Illinois, to attend and compete in the (ICC) from March 12- 14. The event brought together over 1,900 participants from across the United States and Canada.

This trip marked another important step forward for the student organization. As a relatively small group, the experience was especially meaningful, providing valuable insight into how to grow the chapter and build a stronger, more effective marketing organization.

“ICC is a great way for our members to put their marketing skills to the test while networking with students from chapters across the country,” says Ayla Zanoni, 91福利 AMA president. “This was my first time attending ICC, and I look forward to returning next year!鈥

AMA at The Bean

Learning from the Pros

Throughout the conference, members learned from like Sean Greenwood from Ben & Jerry’s and Gen Z consumer and cultural marketing strategist Jade Walters. These keynote speakers emphasized the importance of clearly communicating company values to build strong connections with consumers and following one’s passions to create a personalized path to success. Their confidence and authenticity left a lasting impression.

Competitions Lead to Confidence

In addition to learning opportunities, the chapter actively participated in several competitions, including the Perfect Pitch, Marketplace Simulation, and Design Lab. “The Marketplace Simulation competition required us to identify market opportunities, design products, and analyze data,” says AMA vice president Michael Hardy. This is a fast-paced team competition where students maximize profitability over several hours of work. Hardy added that the experience gave him a better understanding of what it takes to succeed in a competitive market.

The conference also provided valuable networking opportunities. Members connected with recruiters from well-known businesses, gained insight into the future of marketing, and built relationships with students from other AMA chapters.

Team Building and Bonding

The 91福利 chapter of AMA was honored twice during the conference. Chapter director of agency and past president Andie Lovejoy received the for her strong academic performance, leadership, and commitment to pursuing a career in marketing, an achievement that highlights her dedication to rebuilding the club. Additionally, the chapter received the Outstanding Chapter Planning Award, created in collaboration by President Ayla Zanoni and Andie Lovejoy, which recognized planning and research for events such as volunteerism, guest speakers, professional development, and executive board growth.

Beyond the professional and competitive aspects, the trip was also an opportunity for personal growth and team development. Members strengthened their relationships, experienced a new city, and developed a clear plan for the chapter’s future. “One of my biggest takeaways from ICC is the importance of a clearly defined and aligned team,” Zanoni says. “When everyone understands their role, it creates stronger leadership and better collaboration. Most importantly, it ensures that success is shared across the entire team, fostering a more unified and motivated organization.鈥

Outside of the conference, there was also time to explore Chicago. “As someone from a small community, I’m grateful for the opportunities AMA has given me to travel, see new places, and visit landmarks like the Bean in Chicago’s Millennium Park, things I may not have experienced otherwise,鈥 Lovejoy says.

Overall, the ICC experience was much more than competition; it was about growth, connection, and opportunity. It gave 91福利’s AMA chapter the tools, motivation, and vision needed to continue building something meaningful at the Maine Business School.

An outdoor enthusiast, Quincy Clifford from Lincoln, ME, was excited to land a role with the (MOOR). “The opportunity to step behind the scenes on how the Maine government supports our outdoor opportunities immediately piqued my interest,” Quincy says. Her internship is part of the , which brings interns together with Maine state agencies and municipal and county governments, gaining valuable professional experience and building professional networks. 听

How did you hear about this internship?

I have been familiar with the Maine Government Internship Program for a few years now, after learning about it at the annual 91福利 Career Fair. The program is driven by the Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center, which is located on the 91福利 campus.听

Quincy Clifford, Summer intern at the Maine Office of Outdoor Recreation

Why did you choose to intern for the Maine Office of Outdoor Recreation?

When I received the email that I was a finalist for the position, I was thrilled to think that I could spend my summer learning about an industry so vital to Maine’s economy. The enthusiasm from MOOR’s director, Jeff McCabe, was inspirational. I was confident that I could bring the same energy to the marketing and outreach efforts of MOOR, so accepting the offer was a privilege. I love being outside, whether it means hiking, fishing, ATVing, horseback riding, or just sitting around a campfire. Everything from campsites, forests, and trails, to waterways, registered guides, and small outdoor-based businesses is supported by MOOR, and I’m so grateful to be a small part of that mission!

What were your internship tasks?

One of my favorite aspects of the internship was going on site visits to our many recipients of the Community Outdoor Recreation Assistance (CORA) grant, a financial resource provided by MOOR to outdoor-based organizations across the state. I met and networked with professionals in a wide range of areas, from film and media to trail-building and conservation. I photographed our visits to be shared in the newsletter and on social media. This also allowed me to travel around the state and spend my summer engaged in the great outdoors of Maine!

I spent a lot of time attending marketing meetings with the MOOR director, and especially enjoyed listening to conversations surrounding sustainability and representation in marketing. I was tasked with finding and asking the hard questions to ensure that our efforts were thorough. I have also been helping support the planning of the Maine Outdoor Economy Summit by generating ideas for activities and programming, developing a grant spreadsheet to coordinate site visits, and helping develop our monthly newsletter!

What did you like most about your internship?

Traveling to meet people! Two things I enjoy most in life are exploring new places and meeting new people, and this internship was a perfect combination of building relationships and fostering connections in every corner of the state. Also, I鈥檝e been invited as a guest on the “More Than Outdoors” podcast, which is something I’m really looking forward to.

What were the biggest challenges you faced as an intern?

At the beginning, I struggled a lot with direction and knowing where to begin. The Outdoor Recreation industry is vast, diverse, and complex. I spent a lot of time reading Maine-made publications and researching the many partnerships of the MOOR to prepare myself.

What did you learn during your internship that you couldn’t have learned in the classroom?

Through this internship, I was able to conduct interviews with professionals and was consistently required to communicate with people from many different industries and backgrounds. I think no matter how much you practice effective communication and active listening, applying it to the workplace is different. The interviews I conducted required a lot of preparation, but also challenged my in-the-moment ability to guide a conversation and pivot as needed.

I haven’t previously had the opportunity to work on my photography or media interests within the classroom due to my course load. I spent the summer working on shooting and editing, as well as learning about podcast production!

How will this experience help you as you move forward in your career?

Beyond the countless personal connections I have made with professionals across the state, this internship also helped me acknowledge my personal motivators and the ways in which I work best. I feel best motivated when I can associate a mission or some form of public outreach with my work, and I feel most confident and enthusiastic when collaborating with others. I now have real contributions within the Maine Government to share with future employers, along with personal insights to guide my path.

Any advice to share with other students considering an internship?

My advice to students considering an internship opportunity is to take the chance! When I applied to the Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center, I wasn’t sure if there was a place for me in government. I’ve learned that all organizations really thrive off a diverse array of talent and personalities. Maine businesses don鈥檛 just want your insights, they need them!

Dr. Alexandru Roman relocated across the country from California to join the Maine Business School this fall. An Assistant Professor of Strategic Management, Dr. Roman earned his Ph.D. from the University of California, Riverside.

What inspired you to become a professor?

My father was a professor. He was the one who inspired me to join academia. He has always instilled in me the value of knowledge, creativity, and the need to uphold high professional and moral values.

What is your area of expertise?

My main areas of expertise and research interest are strategy and strategic management. A particular focus is human capital resources within the context of organizational performance.

How did you get interested in your field of study?

My first Ph.D. was in Public Administration. However, as my career progressed, my interest expanded significantly beyond my original focus on governmental and nonprofit organizations’ performance. As a result, I decided to pursue a second Ph.D. in Strategy and Organizations, in line with my newly developed research interests.

What classes do you teach at 91福利?

I teach Strategic Management and Global Supply Chain Network.

What are your expectations for your students?

My hope is that students will seize the moment and opportunity to reach their highest personal and professional expectations.

What do you enjoy doing outside of academia?

I am a huge sports fan – specifically, football and soccer. I follow Chelsea FC and the Kansas City Chiefs.

What advice did you wish you had received as an undergraduate student?

  • There are several things that I wish I would have internalized more as an undergraduate student:
  • Have a career plan. It does not need to be perfect, however, typically any plan is better than no plan.
  • Most, if not all, large successes start small. Small early inputs (e.g., saving, investments, training, etc.) have significant aggregate impacts – such that success is nothing more than a function of small incremental changes.
  • Starting any project (i.e., new skill, business, etc.) is typically the most difficult part. It usually gets easier after the initial struggles.
  • There will never be a “perfect time” to succeed. My father used to say that if given enough time, one will always find convincing arguments not do something. As such – don’t give yourself too much time to dissuade yourself from success. As the cliche would have it – just do it!
  • Life indeed “happens” while you wait to start living. Those who say that youth may be wasted on the young may have a point. Make it your job to prove them wrong.

In May 2023, 15 undergraduate business students traveled to England on a travel study trip to learn about the business of sports. Dr. Susan Myrden, Associate Professor of Marketing, and Dr. Jason Harkins, Executive Dean of the Maine Business School, led the 9-day trip to Manchester and London.

“I decided to go on the trip because I wanted to experience the business side of some of the world’s most successful sports teams,” says Mallory Lufkin, a marketing and sport management double major from Brandon, VT. Along with the excitement of seeing the sports facilities, some students were eager to travel abroad. “I had never left the country before and always had an interest in traveling to England,” says Jameson Treadwell from Auburn, ME. “When the opportunity came up to go to England and have an experience targeted towards my major, I couldn’t pass it up!”

Dr. Susan Myrden firmly believes in the importance of studying abroad. During her undergrad, she participated in study abroad in France and Scotland. She also interned abroad in London, England, and The Netherlands. 鈥淚t’s so important for young people to be exposed to other cultures for personal growth,” Dr. Myrden says. “This trip showcased sport businesses in England and allowed students to experience a bit of what life is like in a foreign country.”

The group spent the first three days in Manchester, England, touring the Premier League football teams and stadiums. They took in a game at Manchester United, getting an authentic feel for the sport. “Getting to tour and meet with Manchester United, then experiencing the game day environment with this group of business students, was absolutely amazing,” Treadwell says. Noah Chretien, a marketing and management double major from Shapleigh, ME, agreed. “This class was a great way for me to meet people and make friendships to carry into my future years at MBS,” he says.

On day four, the group traveled to London for the second half of their trip. A highlight was their visit to the National Football League (NFL) London headquarters. “Our visit to the NFL headquarters was my favorite part of the trip,” Lufkin says. She was impressed by an American woman from their marketing department who previously worked in the NFL headquarters in New York City. “Her experiences inspired me,” Lufkin says. “I’m interested in taking a similar career path and working in a foreign country one day.”

The NFL headquarters on the top floor of a modern 8-story building offered a 360-degree view of central London. The space was filled with jerseys and helmets of American football teams. The NFL is expanding its presence within the UK and working on youth development within high schools and colleges.

Students also visited Harrods, the iconic London department store, and enjoyed a proper British afternoon tea. The group explored the city’s neighborhoods, visited British landmarks such as the London Tower Bridge and SOHO, and watched the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace.

“On this trip, I learned a lot about the international sports industries, as well as myself and what I want to do as a career,” Lufkin says. “I will take the knowledge I gained from this experience to heart as I plan my future.”

This fall, six first-year business students embarked on an unforgettable adventure that was two years in the making.

When Dr. Faye Gilbert joined the Maine Business School as dean in 2019, she quickly realized that outdoor recreation is one of the leading revenue generators in the state of Maine. She was introduced to Christopher Bartram, Assistant Director for Maine Bound, and the two created a plan to offer an outdoor adventure a week before school starts in the fall. It was named it Bound for Business and MBS offered it to all incoming first-year students. Maine Bound offers these types of outdoor experiences year-round for all 91福利 students. What makes the Bound for Business adventure unique is that the participating students take the same Intro to Business class, and their professor accompanies students on the trip. Connections that are fostered on the trip continue into the classroom.

“Our collaboration with Maine Bound and our business faculty to deliver the first Bound for Business experience is very special to me,鈥 says Faye Gilbert, Ph.D., Executive Dean of the Maine Business School. 鈥淐onnecting the adventure of Maine prior to the start of the term with a course that will explore the business of the outdoor industry may be a lifetime memory for this cohort.鈥

Academic adventure

Dr. Stefano Tijerina, Lecturer in Management, volunteered to join the adventure. “I wanted to be part of this leadership initiative for our students,” Dr. Tijerina says. “I wanted to have the opportunity to engage on a one-on-one basis before the semester started.” He looked forward to building a unique, intimate learning environment similar to that experienced in the Honors College.

“Bound for Business allows our business students to engage in an experiential learning journey through a thematic program, in this case, the outdoor market industry,” Dr. Tijerina says. “Through the journey, the students encounter leadership-building opportunities while at the same time observing, first-hand, the local and global dynamics of a particular market. This exposure generates an awareness that perhaps may not be achieved through the classroom experience, something essential for entry-level business students that do not have a clear understanding of the multiple career opportunities achievable through a business degree.”

Ciro Falanga from Connecticut had planned on taking a Maine Bound trip before the semester started. When he saw the Bound for Business trip, he knew it was the one for him. “It’s perfect!” he says. “I’m going into business, and I love nature. The fact that the Maine Business School created this trip is very motivational to me.”

The students that participated were from Maine, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Maryland. They moved into their residence hall early, then met up at the Maine Bound center to make sure they had packed everything they would need for a week in Maine’s backcountry. Two instructors led the group鈥搊ne 91福利 senior and one recent graduate. The group spent the first night at the in Princeton, Maine. They were fitted with personal flotation devices, picked out their paddles, and took a swimming test鈥揳ll before a delicious pasta dinner.

The following day they put their boats in the water and headed out for an unforgettable wilderness adventure.

Four days on the water

Carter Selden from Maryland had never been camping before this trip. “My dad did something like this when he was in college, and he said it was pretty cool, so I thought I might give it a try,” he says. For the next four days, the crew paddled their five canoes from rustic camping spot to spot, 19 miles in total.  Each boat carried all the gear needed, including food for the trip. Students pitched in to prepare each meal and gather wood for the campfire.

“At the beginning of the trip, I didn’t think I would be able to paddle far distances,” says Olivia Peakes, one of the students from Maine. “But once we were on the water, the time passed so quickly.”  “One of my favorite moments on the trip was when we silently canoed through a small cove searching for a moose. Even though we didn’t find one, it was a very peaceful experience to listen to the nature around us without any human interruption.”

The students expressed their need to destress before starting their first semester as college students. “The Bound for Business trip gave students the chance to disconnect from their phones and daily stressors in exchange for an outdoors experience to decompress, connect, and recharge for their first year of school,” says Taylor Ashley, MBS internship coordinator.

After four days on the water, the students headed back to campus. Students had time to meet the rest of the first-year students in their resident hall as they enjoyed the first weekend of the fall semester.

“This student-led initiative contributed to the development of strong leaders, created bonds within peers, and generated the pillars for an enriched teaching and learning environment,” says Dr. Tijerina. “I am honored to have been part of this experience and curious to see how this group of leaders will develop professionally in these next four years.”

91福利’s Center for Undergraduate Research has awarded two MBS students a 91福利 Artificial Intelligence Fellowship. Jazlyn Dumas, a marketing major, and Jonathan Libby, a finance major, were awarded $1,200 for their research.

Supported by the Office of Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School, the created the 91福利 Artificial Intelligence (AI) Fellowships. The initiative’s mission is to develop transformative solutions through innovative and coordinated research, education, and strategic partnerships. These solutions should enhance the social and economic well-being of the citizens of Maine and beyond.

Jazlyn Dumas, Class of 2021

Jazlyn Dumas’s research surrounds consumer behavior on social media. Her thesis for the Artificial Intelligence Fellowship is titled “The Importance of a Checkmark: An Investigation Into the Perceptions of a Social Media Verification and its Effects on Consumer Trust.”

“On Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, accounts can be “verified” by the platform,” Dumas explains. Verification is symbolized by a small checkmark that appears on the account’s landing page and is ostensibly for credibility purposes. “For example, Instagram will verify a celebrity’s account to make it clear it is the authentic presence of that person.”

As social media is increasingly being used as a promotional tool, Dumas wants to determine how people perceive verification in association with social media influences in a paid partnership. “Specifically, if a verified influencer is chosen to advertise a brand or product, will consumers view them as more trustworthy because they are verified?” she adds. “Millions of dollars are spent on paid partnerships with influencers every year. But there has been very little research on verification’s impact on trust.”

The Center for Undergraduate Research and the have awarded Dumas research funding. Her MBS faculty advisor, Dr. Stefano Tijerina, commends Dumas’ efforts as part of the MBS Honors Student Committee. “Jazlyn, one of the first students to join the committee, is proof of the effectiveness of our efforts,” he says.
