APCAW changing lab name spelling to \u201cWaponahkik\u201d from \u201cWabanakik\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the community review process for an emerging mapping project, we heard questions from language speakers, community members, and a Tribal historic preservation officer who asked us why we chose to use the spelling \u201cWabanakik\u201d to refer to the land of the dawn. We didn\u2019t have a good answer, just that we\u2019d seen it written like that in other places. Two reviewers shared with us that there is no \u201cb\u201d consonant in the written\u00a0Peskotomuhkati-Wolastoqey<\/a>\u00a0alphabet or in the\u00a0Panawahpskewi<\/a>\u00a0alphabet. Two other informants suggested using the\u00a0Peskotomuhkati-Wolastoqey<\/a>\u00a0spelling \u201cWaponahkik,\u201d as it is recorded in the\u00a0Peskotomuhkati-Wolastoqey Language Portal<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Representation of Wabanaki languages in written form is relatively recent. We recognize there is no one “correct” way to spell land of the dawn in written Wabanaki languages, and there are many different spellings depending on the writing system and language that is being used. We choose to change the word in our lab name to\u00a0Waponahkik,\u00a0instead of Wabanakik, in consultation with language keepers.
