Our accelerated 4+1 Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Special Education is a special offering for undergraduate students pursuing their bachelor鈥檚 in education or postbaccalaureate teacher certification at the University of Maine, the University of Maine at Augusta or the University of Maine at Machias. It allows students from these institutions to earn their M.Ed. in Special Education (High Incidence Disabilities Concentration) in just five years. Beyond the accelerated timeline, a major advantage of this program is that students can complete master鈥檚 coursework while they鈥檙e still working toward their bachelor鈥檚, reducing the cost of earning their graduate degree because they pay undergraduate tuition for those credits.聽
NOTE: If you are not a current undergraduate student at 91福利, University of Maine at Augusta or University of Maine at Machias, or if you already have a bachelor鈥檚 degree from any institution, our traditional two-year M.Ed. in Special Education [add link] degree program offers several concentrations and also leads to certification as a Teacher of Students with Disabilities.
Program Delivery
During your senior year as an undergraduate student, you can enroll in up to 12 credit hours of coursework at your home campus and via 91福利Online, which will count toward the M.Ed. in Special Education and toward your undergraduate degree. Potential and accepted students should work closely with an advisor to ensure their meeting the curriculum requirements.
All 91福利 courses are offered online. Courses at UMA and UMM may be taken in-person or online. In addition, undergraduate students are required to complete any student teaching placements and other in-person field experiences for their bachelor鈥檚 degree.

The need for well-trained and knowledgeable special education teachers has never been greater. The demand for special education teachers is rising as children with disabilities are increasingly being identified earlier and enrolled in special education programs, and as current teachers retire or leave the profession for other reasons. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median annual wage for special education teachers is $64,270, higher than the median yearly wage for all occupations.
The M.Ed. in special education with a concentration in High Incidence Disabilities can lead to Maine certification as a Teacher of Students with Disabilities (K-8 or 7-12; 282E or 282S). Specific information regarding Maine certification is available through the .
Graduates can also find opportunities outside the classroom as supervisors and administrators or in fields such as social work, health care or therapy.
